Dear Reader,
Dear Reader,
As yet another month of the Covid-19 pandemic rolls by, there have been several interesting developments in the world of tech. The pandemic has expedited the transition to digital ecosystems and the next layer of industrial progress powered by the Internet of Things and AI enabled technology has come further to the forefront. The October issue discusses some of the benefits of this digital revolution along with the factors we must be weary of as we move forward. We also have stories ranging from a commentary on the recently announced digital health ID in the country to the lack of representation for non-binary individuals in the world of e-retail.
Best Wishes

With the progression of the pandemic, many technocentric innovations and solutions are gaining traction. Learning from our previous experiences of dealing with outbreaks such as SARS, Ebola etc., the global community is increasingly relying on science, technology and data driven policies to fight the pandemic. The pandemic demands swift reactions - be it in terms of public health response, understanding epidemiology of the virus or mapping out the spread on both global and national level- it involves greater collaboration between stakeholders at different levels.

Companies are also redesigning their business processes given that the idea of digital transformation is no longer a luxury but a necessity.

The recently released Health Data Management Policy Draft proposes the creation of a health ID to centralise data storage and expedite access to patient data across medical institutions and platforms. In theory, this ID is voluntary in nature and will help enable individuals to be integrated into the National Digital Health Ecosystem.

Consumers are increasingly becoming aware that e-commerce websites display adverts based on an array of personal traits - and gender is an important one. Women are often bombarded with suggestions to buy makeup and men with flannel shirts.

The Finance Act, 2020, brought multiple changes in the taxation regime of India. One such
change was the insertion of section 165A in the Finance Act, 2016, which prescribes an
equalisation levy at 2% on the non-resident e-commerce operators.
